His attentions must have wandered, to another one of his playthings, returning me a modicum of free-will. I saw a single, desperate chance to strike at the demon-child. I could hurt it, finally — perhaps fatally — if I was killed while its will once more inhabited me.
The bullets were as nothing; the would-be assassins grew ever more desperate.
I lunged, clutching Prince Felix’s lapel to whisper five final words of my own before the beast’s will subsumed my own.
“Our death…is living water.”
