And the 2013 game convention season begins with Origins 2013! Origins 2013 was held in its home of Columbus Ohio (as it has since 1996). Origins is run by the industry trade group GAMA and hosts the Origins Awards for games. Margret Weis Productions’ Marvel Superheroic Roleplaying game won two Origins awards in bittersweet fashion. (Despite the game’s popularity, MWP recently decided not to renew the Marvel license, citing high costs. – Ed.) A complete list of winners for the 2013 awards is here.
All About Origins
I have been attending Origins since it came to Columbus and have seen it go through many changes. Since a lot of gaming companies use Gen Con to introduce their newest games and some have even foregone getting a booth in the exhibit hall, Origins tends to have a less commercial feel than Gen Con and be far less crowded than Dragon Con. The result is much more emphasis on events. Origins has a lot of games, miniatures and RPGs, LARPS and board games, seminars and card games, etc.
Origins’ theme this year was superheroes.
Despite the lack of first time games there were some previews to be found for example Rather Dashing games brought some copies and were demoing their Kickstarter funded Dwarven Miner game; and Paradigm Concepts brought copies of Rotted Capes to fit the Superhero theme.
I have tended in recent years to shift to playing miniature wargames and Origins is fabulous for that with many great games. Zombies, Kaiju, Martians, Civil War, heck even the Smurfs were battling away.
But The RPG events are full and the growing indie scene well represented with the Games on Demand room running a wide variety of games from the indie scene. I got into a great game of Dungeon World and learned a new system. Speaking of new systems, I got to try Gamewick Games’ WEGS Old Skool, which I have long wanted to try. The game was an absolute blast with my dwarven warrior crawling underneath a table and stabbing the feet of his adversaries!
I even had a brush with celebrity, as I rode an elevator with Kevin Sorbo who was a guest this year.
Origins was an absolute blast which hopefully is a good omen for the con season this summer.
