During last night’s #RPGchat, we discussed keeping your game awesome. Like in the movies awesome. Like cinematic awesome. As usual, the chat didn’t go where I suspected and, eventually, we would up talking about failure in RPGs.
As a general rule, it seems like most players were defining “failure” as “character death,” but there are LOTS of ways to fail that are not, in fact, death-related. In fact, I’d contend that there are lots of ways that a PC or party can fail that are a heck of a lot worse than simply dying.
With that in mind, I’m putting out a call to all my #RPGchat friends and gaming fanatics: Send me your suggestions for SPECTACULAR FAILURE that do not include a PC dying. Let’s compile an epic list of game-changing ways that your game can take a turn for the worst.
Here’s the nitty gritty:
(1) You can leave your ideas as a comment here or, if you prefer, you can email them to me at firstname.lastname@example.org.
(2) Keep the ideas short and sweet – no more than 50 words.
(3) Toss out as many ideas as you can!
(3) When we’re all done, I’ll put the best of them together in a PDF for the world to enjoy. (As an aside, when I pull them all together, I will edit for consistency, grammar, etc.)
Here’s to spectacular failure!
