RPGchat archive for 8/18/2011
The topic for discussion was using social networks and technology to expand your gaming circles.
The overwhelming mention for current internet/social service for finding gamers was Twitter and the #RPGChat of course.
User CaesarSlaad noted the demise of the FLGS (the rise of the internet both as a gathering place and for its ecommerce and how that ties in to the slow demise of the FLGS is an old discussion of course) and the social scene engendered by the game shop.
Chatter Rolling20s brought up the use of Skype for long distance gaming and mentioned the desire for using G+ also.
DenaghDesign met his current group through a local mailing list. DenaghDesign also brought up the old gamer “secret handshake” of leaving d4s or other polyhedral dice out on your desk at work.
ENworld and other forums are a great place to meet gamers. And check to see if there is a local ENWorld GameDay local to you. Or make your own.
Craigslist was mentioned along with a word of caution since it is to easy to get confused with a very different type of role-playing ;-)
Twwombat and qstor2 started a thread about the desire for an “I’m here” app like 4square oriented for gamers. It is an intriguing possibility with check in for conventions and game shops, and “playing now” check in …. The size of the userbase buy-in is critical.
It is hard to beat the friend-of-a-friend network as mentioned by FickleGM and others.
